



Gertrude Himmelfarb spoke about her book, Reflections on Edmund Burke’s “Reflections on the Revolution in France. The Revolution Society will be of special concern to Burke, because its London members correspond with French leaders and openly extol the French Revolution in England. She was awarded the National Humanities Medal in 2004. Gertrude Himmelfarb is the author of many books, including On Looking into the Abyss: Untimely Thoughts on Culture and Society and The Moral Imagination: From Edmund Burke to Lionel Trilling. Burkes insight into the future course of the French Revolution is based in his distinctive approach to thinking about the pathologies of legislative assemblies, which he initially developed in the House of Commons, and later applied to the French National Assembly. Following her remarks, Professor Himmelfarb responded to audience members' questions. Burke, who died in 1797, served in the British Parliament and became a leading figure in the conservative movement both abroad and in the United States.
