I had no idea things were so bad in South Korea during the 1980s. In the author's note section at the end of the book, Kim Hyun Sook explains that the book is based loosely on true events and that some parts of the narrative have been fictionalised to protect the privacy of others. I picked it up out of curiosity because I didn't know that much about South Korean history. It is a must-read for anyone interested in history or political activism. I found Banned Book Club to be a really interesting book. Kim Hyun Sook will soon discover that in a totalitarian regime knowledge is power. Fearing arrest, Kim is frightened to join the club at first, but later finds herself going back because she can't resist the great works of illicit literature. Instead of a harmless reading group, Kim becomes the youngest member of an underground banned book club. When the young editor of the school newspaper invites her to join his reading club, Kim is excited, and eager to make friends with people who share her love of books. She wants to remain apolitical and just focus on her studies. Kim is frightened about getting involve in student protests. When she arrives at college, she finds that a lot of the students are involved in regular violent clashes with the police. Kim insists she isn't interested in politics and just wants to study and avoid trouble. She thinks it is dangerous to go to college because of all the student protests that happen there, but Kim is determined to go. Her mother doesn't want her to go and would rather she stay and work in the family restaurant. Kim Hyun Sook is a modest young woman who wants to go to college and achieve a higher education. Banned Book Club is set in 1983 during South Korea's Fifth Republic, a brutal military regime, that used censorship, torture and murder to silence protesters. It is suitable for readers between 13 and 17 years of age. It is 192 pages long and was published by Iron Circus Comics on. Banned Book Club is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age graphic novel that was written by Kim Hyun Sook and Ryan Estrada and illustrated by Hyung-Ju Ko.
